Soaring city prices, crowded suburbs, and the desire for more space are driving many big-city families and property buyers to explore areas beyond traditional hotspots.

Increasingly, they are eyeing a tranquil part of KwaZulu-Natal, where spacious homes with sweeping views sell for a fraction of urban prices.

Freestanding properties on 2 000 to 4 000 sqm plots now range from R1.5 million to R4 million—a level of value rarely found in major metros—and this affordability is fueling strong demand among young families and retirees alike.

Property buyers set sights on scenic Underberg

The location? Underberg and its neighbour Himeville, tucked into the foothills of the scenic Southern Drakensberg.

Known for its snowy winter landscapes, trout fishing, hiking trails, and easy access to the famous Sani Pass, the region offers a mix of tranquility and adventure.

“Consider the fact that you can purchase a four-bedroom, 246sqm sectional title unit with spectacular mountain views for R1.495 million,” Angela Walker, Underberg area principal for Pam Golding Properties, revealed.

“It’s no surprise young families are choosing to settle here.” Walker also said.

Buyers moving from Johannesburg, Durban, and even the Western Cape are snapping up homes priced between R1.5 million and R2 million, while retirees typically spend around R3 million.

Underberg’s appeal extends beyond property prices, attracting families with its top-notch schools, close-knit community, and the opportunity for many to work remotely in a more scenic environment.
