This province confirms measles outbreak
The Free State Health Department has confirmed a measles outbreak in the Lejweleputswa region, reporting 64 cases primarily among young children.

The Free State Health Department confirmed a measles outbreak in the Lejweleputswa district and is urgently calling on parents and caregivers to vaccinate children and stay vigilant.
64 measles cases in four municipal areas
The outbreak has infected 64 people across the Nala, Masilonyana, Matjhabeng, and Tswelopele municipalities, with most cases occurring in children aged 5 to 9.
“Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to serious health complications,” said Health Department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi.
“It is crucial for parents and guardians to be vigilant and aware of the symptoms associated with measles.”
Recognise the symptoms, act quickly
Symptoms include fever, red rash, runny nose, fatigue, cough, and red eyes (conjunctivitis). Anyone who spots these signs in a child should get medical help right away.
“We urge all parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against measles,” said Mvambi.
“The measles vaccine is safe and effective and is the best way to protect your child and the community from this disease.”
Prevention starts with vaccination
The department stresses that preventing the spread of measles relies heavily on vaccination and community awareness. Parents are advised to check their children’s vaccination records, consult clinics if uncertain, and spread awareness within their neighbourhoods.
“Your health and the health of our community are our top priorities,” Mvambi emphasised.
“Together, we can prevent the spread of measles and protect our children.”
