The search is still on for the 6.5-metre tourist submersible, named Titan, that went missing on its way to visit the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic on Sunday, 18 June.

TITANIC SUBMERSIBLE GOES MISSING

The vessel, operated by the US-based firm Ocean Gate, five members on board. It left for its mission in what should have been a two and a half hour journey, but unfortunately lost signal after approximately an hour and 45 minutes and has not been found since.

According to OceanGate, Titan departed with 96 hours of air, meaning that those oxygen tanks would have been depleted on the morning of Thursday, 22 June.

SEARCH INCLUDES ROBOTS, PLANES AND SONAR LISTENING EQUIPMENT

On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that the Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) “that has reached the sea floor and began its search” for the missing submersible.

Reuters also reports that a French robot called Victor 6000, that can dive to 6 000 metres underwater, has also been deployed.

Previous search efforts have involved the use of aircraft and sonar.
