Egypt, a popular African travel destination for tourists from around the world, will pilot a new visa-on-arrival system this June.

Travel News reports that the country will launch a new digital, self-service visa-on-arrival system at Cairo International Airport starting in mid-June.

The new visa system will give travellers several options to obtain emergency visas upon arrival using a QR code. They will also be able to make visa payments electronically through self-service kiosks at the airport terminals or via a dedicated mobile app.

What does the new electronic visa-on-arrival mean for travellers?

Travellers will reportedly benefit greatly from the new system, including last-minute arrivals without visas, those with incomplete documents, or individuals who were unable to secure a visa prior to departure.

Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, explained that the system will also help streamline the entry procedures for obtaining emergency visas and reduce congestion and overcrowding at airports.

This new pilot program is part of the African nation’s larger efforts to enhance tourist’s visits, improve the efficiency of the entry process, as well as expand Egypt’s capacity to accommodate higher tourist arrivals.
