INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED ABANDONMENT OF PATIENT BY PARAMEDICS IN KZN

The KZN Department of Health said an ambulance in Umlazi responded to a distress call, but the paramedics refused to leave the emergency vehicle and descend a stairway to reach the patient.

According to SABC News, the provincial health department spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane, said the two implicated paramedics were put on precautionary suspension immediately while the investigation unfolds.

DEPARTMENT THANKS PUBLIC FOR REPORTING THE INCIDENT

The patient is reportedly hospitalised and is receiving requisite medical attention. The KZN health department was disturbed by the allegations, and the paramedics’ actions were the opposite of what first responders are meant to do.

“The department would also like to acknowledge and appreciate the actions of those who tagged its executive and senior officials on Facebook, to draw their attention on the matter.

“The department will not hesitate to take the most stringent action possible against any emergency healthcare staff who deliberately fail to discharge their duties and prioritise the life and well-being of those in need,” said the spokesperson.
