So you’re taking your four-legged bestie on a British adventure? Fantastic! But before you hit the M25, it’s important to swot up on UK laws for travelling with pets. Unlike South Africa, there are some key differences that could land you with a hefty fine, or worse, put your pet at risk.

Ray Pierce, the founder and CEO of Zippy Cash for Cars, explains how to transport your pets safely and legally in the UK.

SAFELY RESTRAIN YOUR PET

UK law (Highway Code Rule 57) requires your pet to be securely restrained while travelling. A loose pet can be a distraction and could cause an accident. The penalty? A whopping £5,000 (R119,768) fine! On top of that, pet insurance might be invalidated if your furry friend wasn’t buckled up.

Invest in a proper pet harness, carrier, or a doggy guard to keep your pet safe and sound during your travels. Some car manufacturers even offer special dog seatbelts!

DON’T LEAVE ROVER ROASTING!

This one’s a big difference from South Africa’s sunshine. The RSPCA warns against leaving your pet unattended in a car, especially in the UK’s warmer months. Temperatures inside a car can skyrocket from pleasant to unbearable in just an hour. Pets are more susceptible to heatstroke, and leaving them alone in a car could be fatal.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 protects animals from neglect and cruelty. If your pet gets sick or dies because you left them in a hot car, you could face serious consequences – a fine of up to £20,000 (R479,054) or even jail time!

CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR POOCH

Just like in South Africa, it’s important to be a responsible pet owner! The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 allows UK authorities to fine dog owners between £50 (R1,197) and £80 (1,916) for not cleaning up after their pet during a rest stop. Nobody enjoys stepping in surprises, and pet waste can be a health hazard. Always carry poop bags with you and dispose of waste responsibly.

UK LAWS REQUIRE YOUR PETS TO BE CHIPPED!

Microchipping your pet is mandatory in both South Africa and the UK. Since 2015, all dogs in the UK must be microchipped by law, with the same requirement being introduced for cats in June 2024. This tiny implant contains your pet’s unique ID code, making it easier to reunite you with your lost friend if they decide to go exploring on their own. This is especially important when travelling, as you might not be around for an extended search.

TRAVEL SMART, TRAVEL SAFELY BY ABIDING TO SA AND UK LAWS!

By following these simple guidelines, you and your furry companion can have a safe and legal adventure in the UK. A little preparation goes a long way! Ensure your pet is properly restrained, stays cool, dispose of waste responsibly, and get them microchipped. With these steps in place, you can relax and enjoy your British travels with your best friend by your side!
