WARNING: Heatwave expected in some parts of Gauteng

South African Weather Service (SAWS), issued a warning that some parts of Gauteng must expect a heatwave from 5-8 October 2023.

Parts of Gauteng are under a heatwave warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

According to the weather service, high temperatures are predicted to start on Thursday and last through Sunday in various regions of the province.

WHAT TEMPERATURES CAN BE EXPECTED?

In certain areas, the temperature is predicted to reach the high 30s.

According to weather forecaster Luthando Masinini, the heatwave is the result of an atmospheric high-pressure system that raised the surface temperature.

“The heat wave is characterized by high temperatures that are five degrees above the region’s average. As a result, temperatures have been quite high starting from yesterday and continuing over the weekend. However, there is a small chance that Sunday will see a minor reduction in temperature.

Yersterday another warning was issued, that a heatwave with consistently high temperatures is expected from Wednesday through Friday, according to the SAWS.

WHICH OTHER PROVINCES SHOULD EXPECT A HEATWAVE?

From 04–06 October 2023, these conditions are anticipated over the eastern regions of the Free State, the North-West, and the Eastern Cape as well as the southern regions of Gauteng, Alfred Nzo, and OR Tambo District Municipality.

Under these conditions a prolonged exposure to the midday sun poses health risks, hence it’s advisable to seek shades and keep hydrated. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Northern Cape, western and northern parts of North-West, Western Bushveld of Limpopo, Amajuba Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal as well as Joe Gqabi District Municipality and Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality of Eastern Cape,” SAWS said.
