Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued a heatwave advisory, warning that persistently high temperatures are expected until next Thursday. A Yellow Level 2 warning has also been issued for severe thunderstorms.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms with localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, and localised damage to infrastructure due to damaging winds expected over the central and south-eastern parts of North-West and over the central and eastern parts of Free State, as well as the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over central and eastern parts of Northern Cape.

ADVISORIES

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over Sarah Baartman, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday (29/01/2026). 2. Extremely uncomfortable conditions are expected over most parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, as well as the southern parts of the North West until Friday (30/01/2026).

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot with afternoon isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog and drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the Lowveld.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, morning drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect fine at first becoming partly cloudy and hot to very hot in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Free State

In Free State, fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the east.

Northern Cape

The day will start with morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the east, otherwise fine. The wind along the coast will be fresh southerly, becoming strong south-easterly from the afternoon.

Western Cape

Foggy conditions along the west coast clearing from the afternoon. It will be fine and hot over the interior but partly cloudy and hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme north-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly in the north, otherwise fresh south-westerly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very high

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy and hot to very hot, but extremely hot in places with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south westerly.

The Eastern half: The day will start partly cloudy and hot to very hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north easterly, but strong north of East London from the afternoon. It will become moderate south-westerly south of East London.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog in places in the north and south-east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in places with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north easterly, becoming light to moderate southerly to south easterly in the south early morning.
