Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued Yellow Level 2 and Level 3 warnings for severe storms, and a Yellow Level 1 warning for strong winds, which may cause localised flooding, excessive lightning, damaging winds and hail over parts of South Africa.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours leading to flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges/areas, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail over a populated area over Free State (except in the extreme south), central and southern parts of North West and the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

B. Yellow Level 3 Warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail resulting in localised flooding of susceptible road, damage to infrastructure and settlements in the morning over the extreme south-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

C. Yellow Level 1 Warning: Damaging Coastal Winds resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and/or port for a short period of time and difficulty in navigation at sea between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Matzikama Local Municipality in the Western Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog patches over the highveld and escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the west.

Free State

In Free State, cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the west.

Northern Cape

The day will start with morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the west where it will be fine. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly.

Western Cape

Morning fog along the west coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain in the south. It will be hot to very hot in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly in the west, otherwise south to south easterly, becoming strong along the south-west from the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy in the north-west, otherwise cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and rain. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly becoming moderate south-easterly from late morning.

The Eastern half: The day will start cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and rain, but scattered in the far east. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly becoming moderate south-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light northerly to north-westerly north of Richard’s Bay at first, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly spreading to Kosi Bay by afternoon.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
