Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 4 and Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning forecast to batter several South African provinces

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the central and western parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal

B. Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to localised damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, western parts of the North West, most parts of the Free State, northern parts of the Eastern Cape as well as Mpumalanga Highveld.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Kai Garib, and Kheis, Dawid Kruiper Local Municipalities in the Northern Cape.

ADVISORIES

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the north, where it will be hot.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Very High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme north-east. It will be very hot in the Lowveld.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south. It will be warm in the central parts.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the east.

Free State

In Free State, partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape

The day will start cloudy along the coast in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers except in the western parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly.

Western Cape

Fine in the west, otherwise cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and rain in the east, but scattered along the south coast, where it will be cool. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-easterly but fresh to strong along the west and south-west coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly.

The Eastern half: The day will start cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly, becoming easterly by evening.

KwaZulu-Natal

Partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-easterly north of Durban at first, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly. It will become moderate easterly north of Richards Bay in the evening.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Extreme
