Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe storms with rain and hail for four provinces, while very hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected in two provinces on Tuesday.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow Level 4 Warning for Severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours leading to flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges/areas, damaging winds and hail are expected over the extreme north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, extreme eastern Free State as well as the southern highveld of Mpumalanga.

B. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges/areas, damaging winds and large amounts of small hail are expected over Gauteng, the Free State, western parts of North West, the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, interior of KwaZulu-Natal as well as the highveld of Mpumalanga.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the southern and western parts of the Northern Cape as well as the Cederberg and northern parts of the Garden Route of the Western Cape.

ADVISORIES

Very hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the Khai-Ma and Hantam municipalities of the Northern Cape, Central Karoo and northern parts of the Garden Route in the Western Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Very High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect cloudy with fog along escarpment in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers except in the Lowveld.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, cloudy in the morning with drizzle along the escapement, otherwise partly cloudy warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme south.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect cloudy with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the central and western parts.

Free State

In Free State, cloudy with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the west.

Northern Cape

The day will start cloudy with fog patches along the coast in the evening, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north and eastern parts but scattered in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly.

Western Cape

Cloudy over the southern and western parts in the morning with fog along the west coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in the north-eastern parts where isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to south-easterly but westerly to north westerly along the west coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated thundershowers over the interior. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming moderate south-westerly in the extreme west in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: The day will start partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated afternoon thundershowers over the interior but scattered in the north. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning and evening fog in places over the central and western interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm but hot in places in the north with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers over the interior but scattered in the extreme west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north-easterly, reaching fresh in the afternoon.
