Western Province have been booted from the Grant Khomo Week final after it was confirmed that they failed to comply with the youth tournament’s racial quotas.

Western Province had beaten Boland 41-12 on day one and their arch rivals the Bulls 25-18 on day two of the U16 tournament. That undefeated two-game streak meant Western Province qualified for Thursday’s final where they would’ve faced the Free State, who also won both their matches.

The first two days of play took place on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday set aside as a rest day for the boys. However, on Wednesday, the Bulls lodged a complaint with the organisers, informing them of Western Province’s breach of the tournament rules.

Following an investigation, it was found that Western Province didn’t meet the required number of at least 11 players of colour in their match-day squad against the Bulls due to injuries suffered in their opening clash against Boland.

Western Province’s subsequent disqualification from the final, means the Blue Bulls will now face Free State in the main match, while the Cape side will take on the Lions.
