The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has declared Morocco as champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This follows that controversial AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco where the former won the match 1-0 on 18 January 2026.

On the night, the Senegalese team protested what they dubbed an unfair refereeing decision and left the pitch.

Senegal players walked out of the pitch for a good 17 minutes; and that is two minutes more than the stipulated CAF regulations.

Now, what happened is that Morocco filed an appeal with CAF in an attempt to claim victory after being defeated.

And CAF has now ruled in their feed favour, awarding Morocco a 3-0 win over Senegal, and thus, handing the AFCON trophy to the hosts.

AFCON 2025: MOROCCO DECLARED AFRICAN CHAMPIONS – FULL STATEMENT

“The CAF Appeal Board decided that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 (“the Match”), with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF),” reads part of the statement.

SENEGAL TO APPEAL?

As things stand, Senegal have no chance to appeal this latest ruling by CAF as the competition is solely under the African football’s mother body.

And the only unfortunate part is that the Moroccan national team will not have a picture of them lifting the AFCON 2025 trophy.

Nonetheless, Morocco will go to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as African champions as football politics continue.
