Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen is in the news AGAIN but this time for good reasons!

Osimhen was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal clash on Saturday.

The lanky striker opened the scoring in the 47th minute before setting up Akor Adams for Nigeria’s second goal 10 minutes later.

In doing so, Osimhen helped the Super Eagles reach the semifinals of the 2025 AFCON finals.

He was named man of the match for his efforts, just days after he was hugely criticised for attacking Ademola Lookman on the pitch.

His action towards Lookman was not taken lightly by world’s football as fans didn’t like the way he treated Lookman.

NIGERIA’S OSIMHEN CLOSES IN ON YEKINI’S RECORD

Now, with his goal against Algeria, Osimhen is now three goals away from becoming Nigeria’s all-time goalscorer.

Currently, Nigeria’s all-time goalscorer is retired striker Rasheed Yekini who scored 37 goals between 1984 and 1998.

Osimhen is on 35 goals, meaning the next two games will be crucial for him to either equal (by scoring two goals) or set a new record (by scoring three goals).

WHO WILL THE SUPER EAGLES FACE NEXT?

The Super Eagles will face Morocco in the semifinals which will be played on Wednesday night.

The other semifinal clash will be between Senegal and Egypt in what will be a repeat of the 2021 AFCON final where the Teranga Lions emerged victorious.

Should they not get past Morocco, Nigeria will have another opportunity to play in the 3rd/4th playoff match.

This year’s AFCON final is scheduled for Sunday, 18 January.
