After an agonising semi-final defeat to Nigeria in a penalty shootout on Wednesday, Bafana will now take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in a battle for the Afcon bronze medal.

The third-place playoff against DR Congo will take place on Saturday, 10 February at 22:00 (SA time).

Regardless of this result, though, it’s already been confirmed that Bafana will take R46.9 million in prize money back home to South Africa. This figure has been allocated to the semi-finalists, and the third-place playoff doesn’t have an increase attached to it.

LOTS TO PLAY FOR

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams said there was still a lot of pride in the Bafana camp despite missing out on the final.

“Obviously, we still feel devasted, hurt, a lot of pain,” Williams told Safa media. “But in saying that, I’m so immensely proud of the boys. Day in, day out we showed the resilience, we showed the brotherhood.

“I think this team deserved to be in the final just for the brotherhood we showed and the hard work we did over the last five weeks.

“So, as much as I’m feeling sad, I’m so proud about each and every member of the squad.”
