Fawaaz Basadien: From a starter to a benchwarmer at Sundowns
Fawaaz Basadien joined Sundowns with high expectations but things have gone South for him as he continues to warm the bench.
Fawaaz Basadien was a regular at Stellenbosch FC but he has turned out to be a benchwarmer at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Basadien joined the Brazilians at the start of the season, ending speculation that he could actually move to Kaizer Chiefs.
At the time, Basadien was among the best left-backs in the country, and he was also in the Bafana Bafana setup.
However, his move to Sundowns has proved costly as the left-footer has lost his place in the Bafana Bafana.
This is due to his continued lack of game time under Miguel Cardoso who prefers Aubrey Modiba over Basadien.
Nonetheless, Basadien remains hopeful of getting into the Sundowns starting line-up as he intends to work harder.
FAWAAZ BASADIEN VOWS TO FIGHT FOR HIS PLACE AT SUNDOWNS
“Of course, adapting to a new setup and earning your place in a team of such quality takes time,” said Basadien to Sundowns Digital Magazine.
“However, I understand and respect that I must fight for my place, as we have some exceptional defenders. That motivates me to work harder every day. I am also fully aware of the responsibility that comes with the badge.
“I feel confident that my skills and experience can add value to what Sundowns want to achieve on the pitch and want to bring consistency, energy and leadership every time I step onto the field and help the team maintain our high standards,” added Basadien.
WHAT ARE HIS NUMBERS?
The 29-year-old has featured just seven times for Sundowns this seasons, including just five league matches.
Basadien was handed a start just once since his arrival, and this was against Magesi FC on 20 August 2025.
