Banyana Banyana defender Janine van Wyk has bowed out of the sport as the most capped African player(male or female).
FIFA has given tribute to Banyana Banyana defender Janine van Wyk, who has bowed out of the sport as the most capped African player (men or women).
The former SA national women’s football captain started the match against Burkina Faso in the middle of the field where she operated with Jermaine Seoposenwe, Motlhalo and Noxolo Cesane.

Van Wyk was substituted in the 8th minute and walked out to a standing ovation at the Lucas Moripe stadium following the team’s 2-0 with over Burkina Faso.

“Iconic. South Africa‘s Janine van Wyk hangs up her boots, retiring a legend of the women’s game,” FIFA said on X(formerly Twitter).
Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis said Van Wyk deserved the record as she now hold the most national caps in Africa with 185.

“I also want to say congratulations to Janine for a long career, I think this is well deserved, she’s given her all, always wore her hear on her sleeve, and it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person.
