The 2026 FIFA World Cup will see the introduction of FIVE new rules, mainly to curb time wasting from players.

These new rules were agreed on by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) who makes the laws of the game.

The entire world saw how FIFA dealt with time wasting by adding more minutes at the end of every half played at the 2022 games in Qatar.

Furthermore, as part of anti-racism, IFAB also introduced what is dubbed ‘Vinicious Jr rule’ following recent allegations of racism directed at the Real Madrid superstar.

  • Five-second countdowns for players taking throw-ins and goal kicks.
  • VAR checks for second yellow cards and wrongly-given corners.
  • Players given 10 seconds to leave the pitch when substituted or their replacement will not be allowed on immediately.
  • Players will be banned from covering their mouths when they square up to opponents.

Meanwhile, the Arsene Wenger offside law proposal will be tested in the Canadian Premier League next season.

The Arsene Wenger rule states that goals will be ruled out ONLY if there is a clear distance between an attacking player and an opposing defender.
