Former Proteas star’s son picked for England

The son of Dale Benkenstein has made the group for England’s bid at winning the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup in South Africa.

England were the first to announce the 15-member squad set to participate in the upcoming ICC Men’s U19 World Cup in South Africa and named of former Proteas star’s son in their group.

The son of Dale Benkenstein has made the group for the showpiece event.

A spin-bowling allrounder who made his debut for Essex County Cricket Club at the age of 16, Luc Benkenstein impressed on the recent Under-19 tour of Bangladesh.

Benkenstein was also named vice captain of the squad while Durham batter Ben McKinney will captain the team. Despite being born in Durban, Benkenstein has played all of his professional cricket in England.

His leg spin bowling is his main weapon on the park, but Benkenstein’s batting is improving.

The ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup 2024 will feature 16 teams playing across four venues in South Africa. The upcoming World Cup marks the 15th edition of the U19 men’s event, following the last tournament in the West Indies in 2022, where India clinched the title for the fifth time.

The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups of four with the scheduled start being in January. There will be 41 matches with the final to be played in February.

Bangladesh, Ireland and the USA join defending Champions India in Group A. Group B features England, South Africa, West Indies and Scotland. Group C comprises Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Namibia, while Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand and Nepal make up Group D.
