Did you know that there are teams in the PSL that are named after their township names?

The league has 16 teams, and almost half those have their township names to stay true to their own roots.

ORLANDO PIRATES

Orlando Pirates were founded in 1937 in Orlando, Soweto, and to this day, they have stayed true to their township name.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Mamelodi Sundowns are Mamelodi-based club, and they used play their home games at HM Pitje Stadium in Mamelodi before moving to Loftus.

DURBAN CITY

Durban City owner and chairman Farook Kadodia has demonstrated that he is a fan of township names, and this was seen with Maritzburg United before the club relocated to Durban and changed to its current name.

POLOKWANE CITY

Polokwane City are based in the heart of Polokwane, and they have taken all their home games in the same area at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

SEKHUKHUNE UNITED

While Sekhukhune United have their offices in Johannesburg, they are a team from Sekhukhune in Limpopo and play their home games at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

RICHARDS BAY FC

Chairman Jomo Biyela is one of the seven club bosses who saw the need to make sure that Richards Bay is well known and represented in football in South Africa.

STELLENBOSCH FC

When Stellenbosch FC bought Vasco da Gama’s status, there was one name that came to the owner’s mind, and that was to keep it real just like Richards Bay did.

WHICH OTHER TEAMS CARRIED THEIR TOWNSHIPS?

There are several other teams who made it to the top flight using their township names but some no longer exist.

They include Mahwelereng Real Rovers, Qwaqwa Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic and Vaal Professionals among others.

Other teams include Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs who are still in existence but not playing top flight football.
