Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe was arguably the hottest property in rugby earlier this year when it came to discussions of where he would go.

According to some reports a deal worth around R55 million was tabled by the Stormers, with the agreement of SA Rugby, but it wasn’t enough to lure Kolbe back to South Africa.

Kolbe had been earning close to R20 million per season while at French side Toulon, who found great utility in the Springbok.

Kolbe followed national team skipper Siya Kolisi in signing with agency Roc Nation which was founded by Jay Z.

The agency are reportedly also helping the Springbok in developing the Kolbe Family Foundation to support his philanthropic goals and give back to the community.

Kolbe’s time in France has greatly enhanced his rugby reputation.

In June 2019, Kolbe started for Toulouse in the Top 14 final as the club went on to win the French Championship, while he was later named the Top 14 Player of the Season, and claimed the Try of the Season award.

In 2021, Kolbe won both the European Cup and the Top 14 with Toulouse, before then making a move across to Toulon, where he featured in the 2022 European Challenge Cup final.

He moves on to Sungoliath hoping to end the club’s run of near misses at the Top League’s main trophy.
