Kaizer Chiefs have opted to temporarily halt the search for a head coach and now retain interim mentor Cavin Johnson – media reports suggest.

According to Phakaaathi, Johnson is set to stay put as interim coach of Chiefs and this comes after missing out on landing a clubless Pitso Mosimane.

The football publication reports that Amakhosi have faith in Johnson and his task is to finish the current DStv Premiership campaign on a positive note.

Furthermore, the report suggests that the former Al Ahly assistant coach, Johnson has won the hearts of Chiefs hierarchy with his managerial style since taking over from axed Molefi Ntseki late last year.

Chiefs initially signed the ex-Platinum Stars mentor, Johnson as Head of Youth Development before landing the interim role after Ntseki was shown the exit door.

While many publications including The South African reported that Chiefs were in search of a permanent coach, it seems the Westbury-born Johnson will stay.

“With the way things have gone towards the end of last year, I don’t see coach Cavin going back to being the head of the academy,” reveals the source to Phakaaathi.

“He has managed to bring back the smile to the management and most importantly the supporters.”

In addition, it seems the search for a coach continues behind the scenes but Chiefs’ management is happy about Johnson’s abilities.

INTERIM COACH PERFECT FOR THE CHIEFS COACHING JOB?

The report further adds that the ex-SuperSport United mentor is seen as a perfect candidate for the vacant coaching role at Naturena-based Chiefs.

“It’s still early days, but the signs are there. They believe he is the perfect person to bring back the club to where it’s supposed to be,” adds the informant.

“I think what makes them believe in him is that he has been in football for a long time and knows exactly what’s lacking at the club and what is required to make things right.”

As things stand, Chiefs sit at number six with 24 points on the log table, and with the Nedbank Cup trophy to fight for, Johnson may have the job should he bring smiles to the Amakhosi nation.
