DERAILING HIS AMAKHOSI LEGACY?

It’s now 10 consecutive Chiefs appearances for Itumeleng Khune without a clean sheet. After his 28th Soweto Derby appearance ended in a 1-0 defeat, Khune has lost nine of the last 10 matches he’s started for the Glamour Boys and that was also his first Soweto Derby start since 2018. The one win in that sequence was a recent 3-2 success against hapless Cape Town Spurs. Itu is now on the longest sequence without a clean sheet in his entire career.

This is a stark contrast with a player whose history at Chiefs includes 16 consecutive campaigns at Naturena and 13 major trophies. He was named PSL Footballer of the Year in 2012-13.

KHUNE ISN’T READY TO CALL IT QUITS

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and skipper Itumeleng Khune says he’s still keen to continue his playing career, even though the club stated that his latest contract would be his final one at Naturena. In June, management staff indicated Khune would hang up his boots and then step into an ambassadorial role with some coaching sprinkled in too. The player, however, is making different sounds altogether.

“It will depend on my performance on the field. Every player who is registered in the team is willing to work harder, to compete for a place and give his all for the team with every opportunity they get,” Khune was quoted on TimesLive.

“There is no difference with me. Whenever I am given an opportunity I will perform so  I can get a new contract. I mentioned at the start of the season that my body can carry me until I am over 40.”

“If Buffon could do it until he is 45, El-Hadary could do it until 44, who am I at the age of 36 to entertain the fact that someone has an idea that Itumeleng must retire?
