Celebrated South African coach Pitso Mosimane has emerged as the surprise subject of interest from Ghana’s Hearts of Oak FC. The Ghana Premier League struggling giants are looking for a permanent coach. They want to replace Martin Koopman who left the job last month. Abdul Rahim Bashiru is the current temporary coach.

HOW MOSIMANE’S NAME MADE IT INTO HEARTS OF OAK’S NARRATIVE

In view of this, Hearts of Oak board member, Vincent Odotei Sowah, told the media in Ghana that they fancy a coach of Mosimane’s stature. GhanaWeb has quoted Sowah as having confirmed the interest in the ex-Al Ahly manager during an interview with Asempa FM of Ghana. Sowah is quoted saying: “Those of us in charge of Hearts of Oak now, we want to bring someone like Pitso Mosimane.”

He, however, admitted that Hearts of Oak might not have the financial muscle to pay the CAF Pro Licence holder. Sowah added: “Can we afford him? Do you know how much he was being paid at Al Ahly? The point I am trying to make is that, when appointing a coach, a lot of considerations come into play.”

IS MOSIMANE THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB IN GHANA?

So far, Hearts of Oak have changed eight coaches in the last three years, in a typical Chippa United fashion. Some PSL well-known coaches such as ex-Orlando Pirates mentor Kosta Papic managed Hearts of Oak between 2020 and 2021. It was the second spell for Papic. He was previously in charge of the Ghana Premier League side between 2008 and 2009. Cape Town Spurs trainer Ernst Middendorp also handled Hearts of Oak in the year 2004.

EX-BAFANA BAFANA MENTOR’S TIME AT AL WAHDA

Is the former Mamelodi Sundowns top coach Mosimane, perhaps, be the right man to awaken the sleeping giants of Ghana? Mosimane is available on the job market after he parted ways with Al Wahda FC in the United Arab Emirates. The former Bafana Bafana coach made a surprise exit from Al Wahda four months after he joined from Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia. The 59-year-old won the second-tier league championship with Al Ahli last season. He steered the club back to the Saudi Pro League, but the club opted to release him. It came as no surprise that Al Wahda hired the top PSL coach. However, things did not work out for Mosimane after he suffered four defeats in 10 matches of the campaign.

WHAT NEXT FOR MOSIMANE AFTER LEAVING AL WAHDA?

The former SuperSport United coach recently gave a hint of his next coaching job preference. He said he would fancy even venturing into national team coaching business again. He said: “The Nigeria job is one I would consider, but it would also depend on whether they want the team to be led by an African? Because the only African coach they had was Stephen Keshi [now deceased],” Mosimane told a virtual conference which the South African Football Journalists’ Association hosted recently.

However, Mosimane was quick to clarify his comment on the Super Eagles job. He added that does not want to comment much on the Nigeria job because they have a coach in charge. “But I don’t want to talk too much about the Nigerian job links because there is still a coach there and it’s important that I respect that,” he told added.
