Orlando Pirates transfer news: Underrated Mabasa left frustrated!
Tshegofatso Mabasa’s dream of becoming Orlando Pirates’ all-time goalscorer has been dented as he could leave in January.
Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has again been left frustrated following news that a new No.9 is coming.
Mabasa has been with Pirates since his move from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2019, but he has somehow been unfortunate.
He was loaned out to Sekhukhune United and then Moroka Swallows as coaches could not guarantee him game time.
This despite his proven goalscoring ability at Pirates whenever he’s given a chance to play.
ORLANDO PIRATES SIGN DE JONGH, MABASA TO BE BOOTED OUT
Now, Pirates are reported to have secured the services of Andre de Jongh from Stellenbosch FC for January.
And this means one striker has to make way, and that’s none other than the underrated Mabasa.
De Jongh’s arrival will push Mabasa further down the pecking order which also includes the likes of Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane.
Evidence Makgopa is currently the preferred choice by Abdeslam Ouaddou, and he’s likely to hold on to his place.
But with De Jongh on his way to Pirates, the setup could likely be different to what we are currently seeing.
TSO VILAKAZI’S RECORD STILL SAFE
Mabasa was edging closer to breaking Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi’s long-standing record at Pirates.
Vilakazi remains the club’s all-time goalscorer in the PSL era with 58 goals, and Mabasa would have broken that record this season.
The 29-year-old is currently sitting on 50 goals in 141 competitive matches for Pirates, meaning he just needs eight more goals.
He had an opportunity to cement his legendary status at Pirates, but he, unfortunately, could easily be forgotten after leaving.
Pirates are also expected to strengthen their defence following the departure of Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire.
