Pitso Mosimane targeting World Cup coaching job?

While he is heavily linked with a move to join Kaizer Chiefs, Pitso Mosimane declares ambitions to coach at the FIFA World Cup.

Clubless former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane declares ambitions to coach at the FIFA World Cup despite links with Kaizer Chiefs.

Mosimane is currently without a job after recently leaving UAE’s Al Wahda and media reports suggest that he is head hunted by Chiefs.

However, in a recent interview with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA), Mosimane says he would like to lead a national team and his sentiments suggest he is impressed by Nigeria.

The former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns mentor, Mosimane says the Super Eagles of Nigeria have good and talented players.

The Kagiso-born serial winner says the West Africans want to qualify for the global showpiece and he seems to like Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen.

“To be honest, I would like to coach in the World Cup. I do not choose what comes, I would like to go to the World Cup. South Africa wants to qualify, Nigeria wants to qualify,” says Mosimane.

“If you have Chukuweze and the boy playing for Napoli as your striker, I mean really. That Nigerian team is unbelievable.

“I saw the draw against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Okay, it’s football, it happens. But how can politics between the government and the federation derail the team?

“Of course, I want South Africa to win because I am South African. But in reality, I think Nigeria has the team, man.

“I really would like to go to the World Cup, but it must be a good team that can compete.”

MOSIMANE’S VIEWS ON AFL COMPETITION, WANTS A WORLD CUP GIG

Meanwhile, The South African recently reported that according to TimesLIVE, Mosimane says he struggles to view the CAF’s new African Football League (AFL) as an official continental interclub competition given its invitational nature.

The South African understands that the eight-team invitation AFL will be expanded to 24 clubs in 2024.

“That [the AFL] is a tournament, that’s not CAF. It’s a tournament where you handpick eight teams out of 54 countries. That’s a tournament,” said Mosimane.

“I think the only thing I really like about this tournament is the financials behind it, empowering clubs, clubs getting more money. But that’s about it.

“How you get to be invited in there I don’t know, because I tried to check. Is it points-based or CAF?”
