Springbok man-mountain, RG Snyman picked up chest and shoulder injuries during the 2023 Rugby World Cup final against the All Blacks in Paris last year.

The 29-year-old subsequently underwent corrective surgery back home a few weeks after South Africa’s title success in France.

Initially, it was thought the two-time World Cup winner would be sidelined for several months with recovery and rehabilitation. However, Munster head coach Graham Rowntree has now revealed to the Irish Examiner that Snyman has resumed full contact training, putting the Springbok on track for an earlier return to action than anticipated.

“He trained today,” confirmed Rowntree on Tuesday.

“His return is going to be a bit sooner potentially than the Zebre game [on March 1]. I think we’ll see him in February, exactly when I’m not sure. He’s certainly encouraging me, he’s doing a lot more in training.

“He’s been thoroughly professional and diligent around the group since his news broke and I expect nothing less from the guy, he’s been quality for us.”

Snyman recently signed a deal with Munster’s perennial rivals Leinster from next season. The deal drew the ire of many Munster fans, given the Snyman had been injured for much of his time at the Limerick club.

But Rowntree isn’t the type to hold any grudges.

“What’s done is done, this is business,” continued the former British & Irish Lions player and coach.

“He’s made his decision. I’m interested to see what he does for Munster for the rest of the season. I’m sure he’ll give it his all.”

Munster — currently languishing in 11th spot in the United Rugby Championship standings, travel to Llanelli in Wales to face the Scarlets on 16 February.
