South Africans Abroad: Mailula granted compassionate leave

Mailula has endured a difficult eight-month period as he’s lost his brother just a few months after burying his mother.

South African attacker Cassius Mailula has been granted compassionate leave by Belgian outfit KV Kortrijk.

Mailula recently lost his brother who was very supportive of him when his career took a nosedive.

Now, Mailula is already in the the country to bury his late brother but he will be expected back in Belgium next week.

Now, with KV Kortrijk in action against Eupen on Saturday, they will have to do it with Mailula.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns man is on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Toronto FC, and he will aim to win his place back upon his return.

The 24-year-old has featured just thrice for Kortrijk without finding the back of the net so far this season.

A CAREER RISE OR FALL?

Mailula has struggled since moving to Belgium compared to when he played his football for Wydad Athletic Club.

That was last season where he made 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring six times and providing seven assists.

He will need to dust himself up quickly as the current season has entered its second round.
