South Africans Abroad: Maseko, Singh and Mayambela face off in Cyprus Cup
It was a special night for the three South African players as they were all part of Wednesday’s Cyprus Cup match in Limassol.
South African trio of Thapelo Maseko, Luther Singh and Mihlali Mayambela faced off in the Cyprus Cup on Wednesday night.
Both Maseko and Singh play for AEL Limassol while Mayambela plays for Aris Limmasol.
The two Limassol arch-rivals met with Singh making a cut in the starting XI while newly-signed Maseko started on the bench for AEL.
Mayambela, a known figure in South African football with Bafana Bafana, started for Aris.

Winning this Cyprus Cup match carried more weight than players from the same country facing off.
And this was evident in the match itself as both teams could not break each other for almost 90 minutes.
With the game seemingly heading for a 0-0 and extra time, AEL were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time.
The decision by the referee to award the penalty that late into the game somehow did not sit well with Aris fans.
Sergio Conceicao stepped up to covert and hand AEL a rare win over Aris who are now out of the Cyprus Cup.
WHEN IS THE NEXT MEETING?
The two Limassol sides will put this result behind and focus on the next match which will be in the league.
Their next meeting in the league is scheduled for 1 February 2026, and it’s already expected to produce nothing but fireworks.
