South Africans Abroad: Sundowns tries to lure SA star from Europe
Mamelodi Sundowns have quietly begun their recruitment processes, and this time around they’re looking around Europe.
Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly had their offer to sign Antonio van Wyk rejected by Austrian side SV Ried.
Van Wyk moved to SV Reid from Stellenbosch FC, and Sundowns wanted to bring him back to the PSL.
The proposed deal would have reportedly seen young Siyabonga Mabena move in the opposite direction on top of the transfer fee.
However, according to iDiski Times, SV Reid rejected the offer, and instead asked for Mabena to be included in the deal which Sundowns refused to agree to.
In the past, Sundowns did manage to bring back South African players from abroad, and they include Kobamelo Kodisang and Tashreeq Matthews.

SOUTH AFRICANS ABROAD: SUNDOWNS FAIL TO SIGN VAN WYK
“Mamelodi Sundowns have held talks with Austrian side SV Ried for a possible transfer of Antonio Van Wyk in a swap deal which would see Siyabonga Mabena head in the opposite direction, plus cash,” reports the publication.
“According to sources, Sundowns tabled an offer for Van Wyk after their long interest in the former Stellenbosch FC player which was reportedly turned down by Ried who instead made a counter offer by asking for a swap deal for Mabena plus cash, which Downs also turned down.”
IS VAN WYK KEY AT SV REID?
The 23-year-old left winger only arrived at SV Reid in September 2024 but he has proven himself beyond imagination.
Van Wyk is a regular with 36 appearances, two goals and seven assists to his name since then.
This season only, the speedy winger has featured 18 times across all competitions with a single goal to his name.
Van Wyk is a teammate to former Kaizer Chiefs skipper Yusuf Maart who joined SV Reid at the start of the current campaign.
