South African Airways has announced the cancellation of its flights to Mauritius due to adverse weather conditions.

MAURITIUS

Mauritius is currently being hit by a cyclone, making flying into and out of the island unsafe.

Earlier this week Mauritius’ meteorologists noticed the formation of a tropical depression. This has now developed into a cyclone.

CYCLONE ELEANOR

Cyclone Eleanor is impacting the island and the region. Yesterday Air Mauritius cancelled flights to nearby islands including Reunion and Rodrigues.

Owing to the development of Cyclone Eleanor, weather conditions have signifacantly deteriorated in Mauritius. This results in unsafe conditions for aviation.

AIRPORT CLOSURE

Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport closed on 22 February 2024 and will remain as such until further notice.

This prevents airlines from operating flights into and out of the small island state.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS

Two South African Airways flights, SA190 from O.R Tambo International Airport to Mauritius, and flight SA191 to Johannesburg from Mauritius have been cancelled.

The cancellation of these flights due to adverse weather conditions is a procedural requirement – for the safety and well-being of customers and crew.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS

Customers affected by the flight cancellations will be re-accommodated on flights when it is safe to resume normal scheduled operations.

Affected passengers will be notified accordingly.

Earlier this week Air Mauritius announced it would allow passengers to change their flights due to expected disruptions to its flights.

TROPICAL CYCLONE

A cyclone is an intense circular storm that originates over warm tropical oceans. It is characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high winds, and heavy rain.

Drawing energy from the sea’s surface and maintaining its strength as long as it remains over warm water, a tropical cyclone generates winds that exceed 119 km per hour.
