Mauritius’ national airline is allowing passengers to change their flights due to possible flight disruptions.

According to meteorologists, a tropical depression is expected to affect weather conditions around the island this week.

The approaching tropical depression is expected to impact the region, particularly on 22 and 23 February.

AIR MAURITIUS FLIGHT DISRUPTIONS

The airline has advised that it will permit a free change for passengers booked on its flights up to 29 February.

It will offer passengers a free date change for flights on the same route, for the period up to 31 March 2024.

The airline has cancelled flights to the nearby islands of St Denis (Reunion) and Rodrigues due to strong winds.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION

A tropical depression is a low-pressure area surrounded by circulating thunderstorms and winds measuring up to 38 miles per hour.

Tropical depressions are often one of the first indications that a tropical storm or cyclone is forming.

A tropical depression generally exhibits the same weather conditions as a tropical storm, including low pressure, humid air, rain and moderate winds.

However, the biggest difference is that the conditions are milder inside of a tropical depression.

FLIGHTS TO AND FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Mauritius is a favourite island getaway for South Africans. Various airlines operate scheduled flights between South Africa and Mauritius.

Passengers booked on Air Mauritius flights are asked not to go to the airport if they have not been informed about the status of their flights.

This is to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

SITUATION UPDATES

The airline requests passengers to provide their cell phone numbers so that they can be kept updated.

The airline will make updates available on its website and social media platforms.
