South Africa Population Grows by 3.9 Million to 55.7 Million Since 2011

The South African population has grown to 55.65 million in the past five years, according to the latest survey by the department of statistics. The South African population has grown to 55.65 million in the past five years, according to the latest survey by the department of statistics.

In the Community Survey figures released on Thursday, Statistics South Africa said the population grew from 51,770,560 in 2011 to 55,653,654, about 3.88 million. There are 27,247,226 males and in 28,406,428 females.

The population was 40.6 million in 1996.

There are 16.9 million households. It also said 83.5 percent of households have access to piped water and 90.3 percent have access to electricity.

In a breakdown by city, the stats department said that Johannesburg has a population of just under 5 million, while Cape Town’s is just over 4 million. Ekurhuleni has just under 3.4 million and Tshwane/Pretoria just under 3.3 million. Ethekwini/Durban has just under 3.7 million.
