When South African resident Ashleigh Frank Elad heard that the children at a Gauteng hospital were freezing during this particularly cold winter (in which snow has fallen in many parts of the country) she decided to do something about it.

Snow in South Africa
It has been a particularly cold winter in South Africa – snow seen here in Worcester.

With the help of her niece Ashleigh has launched a campaign to help not only the children at that hospital, but all around the country. She is appealing to the community to donate gowns (along with personal notes for the recipients).

Ashleigh wrote the following message to SAPeople:

“It has come to my attention that the patients in the children’s ward at the Johannesburg General Hospital are freezing.

“I have decided to start a WINTER CHILD’S GOWN COLLECTION for all these little children. It’s not being run by any organisation, just by my niece, Gabi Medalie, and myself.

“We are looking to make a difference in someone else’s life and keep these children warm.

“My request too is to write a short note for each gown you donate. My plan is to donate to all government hospitals. I’m requesting from you, the community to help me with this Child’s Gown Donation Collection.

“Any child’s gown – boys or girls – any age will suffice.

“I’d like to start the donations as soon as possible, this will be an ongoing project as I have received many heartfelt requests from around the country.”

Ashleigh says she is already overwhelmed by the response. “I am speechless at the response I have received in such a short time with my DONATE A WINTER CHILD’S GOWN DRIVE,” she wrote on FB. “So many people from around the world are somehow getting relatives and friends to drop off gowns.”
