In a statement yesterday, the City of Cape Town said dam levels have dropped to 33%, which is 1,5% down from a week ago. With the last 10% of a dam’s water mostly not being useable, dam levels are effectively at 23%.

The City reported that consumption is at 837 million litres of collective use per day, which is above the revised water consumption target of 700 million litres per day… which means with 23% left, that Capetonians are looking at appoximately 121 days of useable water left.

The City of Cape Town has introduced Level 3B water restrictions to try to cope with the severe water shortages as the Western Cape experiences its worst drought conditions in its history, according to the Department of Water & Sanitation.

“We may not have control over the weather, but we do have control over our use of potable water for non-essential purposes. Our actions can change the scenario,” said the City’s Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille.

While thanking those who have lowered their water consumption, in keeping with Level 3B restrictions, the City has published a list of those addresses where people are using much more than the average 20,000 litres per month. The Top 100 are all using over 100,000.

The current list contains addresses. Only once the residents or commercial properties pay their fines, or appear in court, will their identities be published (which may not seem like much of an incentive to pay for some!).

Once winter rains begin to fall in the region, the restrictions will be reviewed.
