A massive swell hit Plettenberg Bay last week on 24 August 2017, particularly hammering the well known Beacon Island resort… although it didn’t seem to bother them too much. The resort wrote on facebook: “Beacon Island lawns and outdoor pool took a beating, but what a show! Snuggled up in the Sea Lounge, our guests got to enjoy front row seats.” For those who weren’t there, here are the photos…

Hotel guest John Vicky Goslin uploaded these Before and After pictures:

This the the “before” shot from our room.
The After Shot. “This is the view from our room after the storm. The swimming pool is full of dirt & rubbish, the artificial grass has been washed away. The car park at the hotel was flooded. The staff have been working hard all day to clean up the mess. At its peak the sea was washing over the entire lawn area. Waves were crashing on the rocks in front of the hotel and the spray almost reached the roof of the 6 story hotel. Very dramatic.”

Local photographer Vinthi Neufelt captured these photos. (Check out Vinthi’s amazing photos of a similar swell at Beacon Island, Plettenberg Bay in November 2016… which were so huge people thought they’d been photoshopped!)
