The Durban police officer was returning home to KwaNdengezi from work on Friday at around 22h00, when the assailants opened fire on his vehicle.

According to KZN’s Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Kwela sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local hospital in a critical condition. He remains in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Local resident Tracy Lyle posted a message on social media that has gone viral, pleading: “Please pray for local police officer, Constable Kwela of the Shongweni K9 Unit, he was attacked and shot multiple times near his home on Friday night and he’s currently in ICU ?.

“Constable Kwela and his dog, Johnny, have been responsible for removing millions of rands’ worth of drugs from our streets, they are an amazing team. Please pray for him.”

Meanwhile Mkhwanazi has vowed that “every attempt is being made to trace the perpetrators of this heinous crime. Those who attack our police officers will feel the full wrath of the law bearing down on them and they should always be looking over their shoulders.

“We wish the member a speedy recovery and he will remain in our thoughts and prayers until then.”
