Parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape have received snow this morning in South Africa, and some more isolated snowfalls are expected through the day, according to Snow Report SA.

The snow has fallen on the anniversary of the 7 August 2012 snowfall in South Africa where parts of Gauteng received snow, turning Joburg into Snowburg for only the 22nd time in the previous 103 years.

According to Snow Report SA, more snow is expected to start in the north of Lesotho in the Maluti Mountains (Afriski area) during the early hours of Thursday morning.

“By sunrise on Thursday, we are expecting to see light snow all across the Drakensberg from the north to the south, mainly on the Lesotho side, with some flurries possible in the southern KZN areas north of Kokstad and around Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.

“It is possible that these falls could extend into places in the KZN Midlands, but it is too early to be sure about this. The Eastern Cape Drakensberg should also have snow by this time.”

Some rain is also expected.

Snow Report SA said snowfalls are expected to intensify on Thursday night in Lesotho and the Eastern Cape Drakensberg with up to 20cm being possible in central Lesotho.

“Barkley East and Lady Grey should also get a dusting. These falls are expected to carry on until Friday morning, with some possiblesnow entering further south in the Eastern Cape over places like Hogsback, the Amatola Mountains and possibly even as far inland as the Sneeuberge outside Graaff-Reinet during Friday. By late night on Friday, all snowfalls should cease.”
