A 50-year-old father was gunned down outside his son’s school in Green Point on Tuesday morning at 07h35. His eight-year-old son was injured in the incident and has been taken to hospital, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

According to local reports the man has been named as Advocate Peter Mihalik, who has represented high-profile gangster figures like Colin Booysen, the younger brother of alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen. He also represented property mogul Jason Rohde who stands accused of killing his wife in July 2016 and staging her suicide at the Spier Hotel. (He pleads not guilty.)

Mihalik, a widower, was reportedly shot in front of his children’s Cape Town school, Reddam School.

In a press statement issued by Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana from SAPS Western Cape Media Centre, SAPS said detectives of the Anti-Gang unit and SAPS crime scene experts are combing the scene for clues following the shooting incident that occurred on the corner of Cavalcade and Thornhill.

“According to reports, a 50-year-old man was shot in his head and fatally wounded in his vehicle by an unidentified suspect who is yet to be arrested,” said SAPS.

The suspect was seen fleeing the scene in a metallic grey VW Polo. It’s reported by some media that he had an accomplice waiting in the car, whilst others says he was a “lone gunman”. SAPS did not mention an accomplice.

“The victim’s eight-year-old son sustained an injury during the incident and was admitted to hospital. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said SAPS.

According to the Truth and Justice Continue page on Facebook, Mihalik also had a daughter. She was not harmed in the incident. His wife is believed to have committed suicide in early 2018.

In November 2016, an associate of Mihalik’s was gunned down in similar circumstances, in his vehicle.

Investigative journalist and author Mandy Wiener tweeted Tuesday morning: “In 2016, criminal attorney Noorudien Hassan was shot dead outside his home in Lansdowne in Cape Town. Hassan worked closely with Pete Mihalik. Now Mihalik has been shot dead while dropping his kids at school. Frightening.”

According to News24 Mihalik had recently found himself “deeply involved” in a “turf war” that has been going on in Cape Town for a couple of years between alleged extortion syndicate boss Nafiz Modack and alleged mafioso Mark Lifman, and had reportedly tried to intervene as a mediator to resolve the dispute. Modack’s trial is scheduled to begin in the Cape Town Regional Court next week. Mihalik had withdrawn from the case.

Truth and Justice Continue reports Mihalik did have bodyguards, but the shooter went right up to the window and shot him.

Wiener said: “Pete #Mihalik’s murder is awful. Feel terrible for his children – seeing their father shot while being dropped off at school. Their mother also passed away a few years ago. Absolutely tragic.” (In other reports, their mother’s death is cited as early 2018.)
