American icon Oprah Winfrey was South African expat Trevor Noah’s special guest on the Daily Show in the USA last night (available to DStv subscribers this evening at 21h30).
The show got off to a great start with Oprah surprising Trevor in his make-up chair beforehand, and Oprah discovering her favourite bottle of tequila waiting in her room. (See videos below.)
Oprah’s appearance was to promote her new book ‘The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life’s Direction and Purpose’.
She also discussed her new Apple TV+ docuseries with England’s Prince Harry, which will “focus on both mental illness and mental wellness”. Answering a question from the audience, Oprah said her mission is to “normalise” mental illness. She discussed the problem amongst black Africans who are clearly suffering trauma and depression, but believe the myth and say “I can’t be depressed, I’m African”.
Of her recent controversial interview with the two men who claim they were molested by Michael Jackson, she said she needed to understand what happened. (There has been a backlash from many of her fans.)
Oprah stayed after her interview for Trevor’s award-winning Between The Scenes, or as she called it, “that behind-the-scenes thing you do”… in which you could see Trevor having fun. (Watch below.) Oprah tried to list a few “normal” things she still does – which included owning an avocado orchard… to which Trevor burst out laughing and said: “Oh the story got not normal Oprah!”
The American talk show queen also spoke about opening a school in the US like the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Oprah said it was always her intention to open more than one school, “but it’s taken me a while to get it right. It took me about 10 years to actually get it right.”
The show ended with an Oprah classic – a gift for each audience member, her book. Trevor gleefully chanted: “You’re getting a book. You’re getting a book. Everybody’s getting a brand new book.”
