South Africa’s Brad Binder earned himself the best birthday present ever today – with his first Moto2 victory of the year, at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich, in Austria. It was an exciting finish, with Brad holding off a late charge from Championship leader Alex Marquez on the final lap, in a race that saw a “handful of riders crash out of the leading group”, according to MotoGP.

Binder was on a mission to win! MotoGP said he took the holeshot from second on the grid and quickly began to break clear, settling into an early lead of just under a second. During the race one, Binder fought off several contenders including Remy Gardner from Australia who attempted to grab the lead from the South African in his bid for a debut race win, but Binder was on top form and with 10 laps remaining managed to forge ahead. (Gardner eventually crashed out.)

MotoGP said despite Marquez’s fight to win in the last remaining laps, “the birthday boy (Brad) held on to clinch a first win of the 2019 season and send the Austrian fans delirious, with orange flags and caps waved wildly all the way around the Red Bull Ring.” Watch video below:
