With over R102,000 raised and many hearts captured, Tannie Poppie is finally making her way to Italy where she will prepare her famous ‘roosterkoek’ to new adoring fans!

This incredible dream has been made true by 43-year-old Capetonian, Stan Engelbrecht, who befriended Poppie six years ago… and the kindness of strangers around South Africa who have donated to a fund started by Stan.

Poppie (63) has never left the Western Cape in her life… and is now on her way to Italy for ten days!

Stan started the fundraiser on BackABuddy to raise funds for his dear friend – Poppie van As, an “underprivileged lady who has a small roadside ‘roosterbrood’ stand on the N1 in Laingsburg”.

Stan and Poppie met by chance six years ago. He asked her to come and prepare her now famous ‘roosterbrood’ at a few of the bicycling races he organises, and over the years she has made ‘roosterbrood’ at all Stan’s races, and become part of the family.

As Poppie took off on her grand Italian adventure, Stan wrote to all the “generous donors” who made her dream come true:

“Myself, Donnet and Poppie would like to thank each and every one of you for your contributions – big or small.

“Your enthusiasm and well wishes warmed Poppie’s heart, and each bit you gifted her will make her trip all the more special.

“We thank you also for your continued support as all the interest in Poppie’s life story inspired us to tell her story through a documentary.

“We’ll stay in touch, and let you know when you can expect to see ‘A Diamond in the Sand’. We’re working hard to capture the reality and hardship Poppie has faced through her life, and of course, the sheer joy and inspiration her journey to Italy will bring her.

“We are writing to you from aboard our plane to Italy, but likely by the time you read this we will be there!”
