One person was stabbed and another hit over the head with a brick on Cape Town’s beautiful Camps Bay beach on Monday evening, a spot that is very popular with tourists from South Africa and around the world. This comes just days after a University of Cape Town (UCT) student was fatally stabbed on Clifton’s 3rd Beach. In both incidents the perpetrators wanted to steal their phones.

According to reports the incident occurred at 18h10 on Monday and came following an altercation with a would-be thief who allegedly tried to steal someone’s phone.

Nicola Jowell, councillor for Ward 54, said on Facebook: “A young man was approached by a man who tried to steal his phone. The youth and his friends gave chase after the suspect and cornered him. He then stabbed one in order to get away.”

She said the second injury with the brick happened a short while later, when Law Enforcement and the South African Police Service (SAPS) had arrived on the scene.

“A passing motorist stopped and confronted the group of youths, I am unsure at this stage as to the exact nature of the confrontation,” said Jowell. “One of the youth threw a brick at this man and he was injured by this attack. This person was arrested by SAPS.”

A police spokesperson confirmed there were three youths, aged 15 and 16, who were from Bloekombos, and that a suspect had been arrested.

Captain FC van Wyk told local media: “Camps Bay SAPS members in the vicinity arrested an 18-year-old male on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH). The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon on the mentioned charges.”

Jowell said the initial suspect of the stabbing and attempted phone theft has not yet been arrested.

Some locals complained of the lack of law enforcement in Camps Bay, and how long it took police to arrive on the scene. According to one witness, Chris Von Ulmenstein, writing on Jowell’s post: “Incident arose from an attack of Coloured homeless beachfront persons stabbing a person in a group of young African men drinking and doing drugs near the sewerage pump station. Blood stains on the Promenade pavement.”

Writing on her own page, Von Ulmenstein said Law Enforcement is “totally visible by their absence…. ?????. Not good for Camps Bay.”

Monday’s stabbing comes just days after a 19-year-old UCT Film and Media student from KwaZulu-Natal was stabbed to death on Clifton 3rd beach.  First-year student Mhleli Cebo Mbatha was with friends when they were attacked by two suspects wanting to steal their cell phones. Two female students reportedly escaped unharmed, but his male friend was hospitalised after being stabbed in the leg.

There have been no arrests.

In an apparently unrelated incident, Jowell reported earlier today that “a homeless person has passed away near Maidens Cove. It’s believed to be natural causes. All resources are on the scene.”
