Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi has revealed a couple of the costumes she will be wearing in Atlanta, USA, to compete with beauty queens from around the world in the Miss Universe competition (which has its Final on 8 December). And South Africans have mixed reactions.

Revealing the ‘Wave of Love’ National Costume, on Friday, the Miss South Africa Facebook page was bombarded with messages that ranged from absolute adoration to incredulous disappointment.

The costume – seen below – was designed by Lloyd Kandlin of The Costume Department, and apparently shows the Eastern Cape’s Zozi “adorned in love letters written for the women of South Africa”, according to the Miss SA page.

These are actual love letters that Zozi asked SA men to write to the SA women as part of their pledge of support for her #HeForShe campaign (raising awareness against gender-based abuse).

A proud and emotional Zozi revealed the outfits at an event in Sandton days before she jets off to Atlanta for the Miss Universe competition.

While some thought the costume, photographed by Willem Botha, was “unique and bold”, others hated it. They said Zozi looked stunning, but the costume less so. Some said they just didn’t understand it… to which a fan from Botswana explained: “It’s a costume for heaven’s sake… It’s art… you don’t take a glance at art and understand it right away… It’s a costume. Not the dress you wear to buy bread ko Spaza??”

Some fans suggested it would have been better if it was a little softer “and remove the chandelier crystals, please”.

Another less flamboyant outfit, designed by Biji La Maison, was a bigger hit with social media users… with the Miss SA page describing Zozi as an “African goddess”.

One fan said: “Oh my soul!!! THIS is DEFINITELY a Miss Universe dress! Stunning! Breathtaking! Wow! I am SO impressed with this girl! Absolutely gorgeous! Take that crown you beauty!!!”

Many South Africans said Zozi is sure to win, this is South Africa’s year!
