There is a current shortage of avocados in South Africa, pushing prices up… but watch below as this kind stranger pays hundreds and hundreds of rands for a bunch of avocados that were really on sale for R50.

The man behind the generosity is most likely Businessman Malcolm X who has given away millions in similar kind gestures. His mission is to “be a blessing to someone”… and the kind deeds are filmed to encourage others to do the same.

In this video – which has been viewed over 3 million times since Thursday (less than 48 hours ago) – the lucky recipient is a guy called Daniel, from Roseville in Pretoria, who sells avos to provide for his four sons. He says he can’t get a job, so rather than turn to crime he sells avocados (and cleans cars).

Daniel’s appreciation for the businessman’s generosity is tangible as the man (off camera) hands over more and more notes. All Daniel dreamed of was R50 to get rid of the last 14 heavy avo’s he’d been carrying around.

BI Phakathi – who shared the video on Facebook – told SAPeople last year that Malcolm X is a “simple guy with a big heart for people. He has been dishing out money to the poor and students like Father Christmas.”

The businessman tells Daniel his family are going to enjoy the avocados. And right now everyone in SA is appreciating the avos they can get. The seasonal shortage means in some places the price actually is more than R50 for two avocados! The avocado harvest in SA starts in late February and lasts till October. Even Woolworths has apologised for the “temporary inconvenience”.

So if you’re desperate for an avo – you know where to go to buy them! Daniel says he’s usually near the train station!
