Teams of cleaners from various departments in the city of Johannesburg have been unleashed on once crowded, trash-filled areas, especially taxi ranks, to clean up and sanitise them during the lockdown.

The mayor Geoff Makhubo said yesterday, “The City has over the last three days run an extensive drive to clean and sanitize taxi ranks and our bus stops in an effort to protect residents and our spaces.” Two of the main taxi ranks to be cleaned were Kliptown in Soweto and Noord Street in Johannesburg centre.

The City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Property Company have been posting pictures on social media of the incredible clean-up.

“Teams are out cleaning and clearing at the MTN/Park Central Noord taxi Rank now,” JPC tweeted on Sunday morning.
