5 Suspects Arrested After School Burglary in Free State

Five suspects aged between 23 and 26 will appear in Sasolburg Magistrate court on Friday, 24 April 2020, on a charge of business burglary. The incident happened at Katleho Mpumelelo Senior Secondary School, one of many South African schools that have been broken into during Lock-down.

The value of stolen items from the Katleho school is estimated at R250,000 said the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State.

“On Tuesday, 21 April 2020 at about 18:30, members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) Provincial Task Team and Zamdela Trio Task Team followed up on an intelligence driven information of business burglary,” the provincial commissioner in the Free State said in a statement.

The investigation led them to possible suspects. After questioning the first implicated suspect, SAPS went to a different residence in Zamdela where suspected stolen items were recovered. These included a Black Printer Copy Machine, Stationary, Sharp Scientific Calculators, Mathematical and Drawing Instruments.

SAPS officers then went to Viljoenskroon where they recovered more suspected stolen items – two Gas Stove four plate, two 18kg Gas and three Big Silver Cooking Pots

SAPS is investigating further to ascertain whether the suspects were involved in any other business burglary incidents.

Schools in South Africa have been hard hit by criminals during the lockdown with at least 403 school burgled, vandalised or torched.
