As schools enter a second month of lockdown in South Africa, parents and teachers are stretched to the limit to keep up with schooling at home. But while some learners can continue online, many have to cope with the challenge of sporadic communication with their teachers and a lack of connectivity and resources. Can learners complete the school year or is it, as some have said, a lost cause?

That’s the big question on Carte Blanche this evening – which you can watch in South Africa on DStv Now… or stream it overseas in most countries abroad from Tues 28 April on Showmax International.

Carte Blanche presenter Claire Mawisa says: “My son is currently in grade 9, and I am grateful that I have the means to send him to a well-resourced school.

“Yet, even in this wonderful school, where one could easily assume that most learners come from middle class families, 60% of the learners do not have internet access at home, nor devices to access that internet.

“COVID-19 has stopped education in its tracks for most children in this country. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for those who are less fortunate.”

In this segment on tonight’s show, produced by Carol Albertyn Christie, Claire Mawisa asks: “How do we make sure that no learner is left behind during this pandemic?”

CEOs on the Frontline

Temporarily closed for business – how lasting will the impact of COVID-19 be? StatsSA has found that around half of all businesses in the country have suspended trading during the national lockdown. A third of companies reviewed expect they suffer more now than they did during the 2008 recession. Carte Blanche asks industry captains to share their leadership lessons and perspectives as COVID-19 decimates businesses across the board.

COVID-19: The Hunger Challenge

Before the national lockdown, South Africa’s unemployment rate was at an all-time high. Now, with most school feeding schemes closed and thousands of parents jobless, the impact of the lockdown has been devastating for the poor. More people than ever before are out of work and a new challenge has emerged for the country – hunger. With a new relief package in hand, can government keep up with the demand for social assistance for the poor?
