A 42-year-old shipping agent in Edenvale was arrested and R3 million worth of rhino horn destined for Malaysia was seized by customs officials at O.R. Tambo International Airport earlier this week, the police said today.

The 47 kilograms of rhino horns were marked and declared as scaffolding equipment, the police said in a statement. Upon investigation the authorities found boxes containing the horns inside crates.

Further investigations by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team led them to a shipping agent in Edenvale, where the suspect was arrested and charged for illegal dealing in rhino horns and perjury.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Friday for allegedly dealing in rhino horns and perjury.
