DStv continues to bring the best of international content to South Africans with the movies and series streaming and playing on its platforms receiving top honours at this year’s 78th Golden Globes Award ceremony.

Twenty-five of DStv and streaming service Showmax’s featured content from the top studios and broadcasters from around the globe were shortlisted for The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s prestigious accolade celebrating excellence in film and television.

Small Axe which premiered on DStv on 16 November on BBC Brit (DStv Channel 120) saw a win for John Boyega, who won the Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series award.  Boyega plays Leroy Logan, a young black man in the ‘Red, White and Blue’ segment of the series trying to break the colour barrier at London’s Police Force in the early 1980s.

Mark Ruffalo won Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award for his performance as twin brothers, in the hugely emotional I Know This Much Is True which premiered in August last year on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) and is available to binge on Showmax.  This series tells the story of Dominick Birdsey, whose identical twin brother, Thomas suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and the decisions he must make on his behalf after a particularly bad episode.

Best Motion Picture Drama and the Best Director for a Motion Picture Awards for the night went to Nomadland, which had already picked up the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It centres around a 60-year-old woman embarking on a journey of self-discovery and living as a modern day nomad after losing everything in the recession. Nomadland will be coming to DStv along with tonight’s snubbed nominees, The Flight AttendantNormal People and The Croods: A New Age.

Coming this month to Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122) is Schitt’s Creek which was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and walked away with the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series at the glitzy virtual event hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Unexpectedly,  HBO’s The Undoing, was one of the night’s biggest losers, despite amassing a whopping four nominations. The show was very popular when it broadcast on M-Net (DStv channel 101)  and is still available to stream on Showmax. Viewers who haven’t watched this dark, psychological drama can still binge and decide if they agree with the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Global streaming service Netflix led the pack with 6 wins in both movies and series. Netflix subscribers or those wishing to join Netflix to watch its award-winning shows, can access the streaming service on the recently launched DStv Explora Ultra decoder, and have an option of adding their Netflix bill to their  monthly DStv subscription.

Showmax is also available on the Explora Ultra decoder.  DStv customers have the option to pay for Showmax as part of their monthly DStv bill. For DStv Premium subscribers, there’s no additional cost while DStv Compact and Compact Plus pay R49 a month.

Amazon Prime Video – also available on the Explora Ultra device – content including Borat Subsequent Movie Film walked away with two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The Golden Globe Awards aired on M-Net Movies 1 (DStv Channel 104) at 03:00, and will re-broadcast tonight at 22:30 on M-Net (DStv Channel 101).
